Science and Technology Meet: What’s For Dinner?

21 09 2008

Hi all,

This week we will be working with Mr. Forde’s young scientists to develop an in-class “food web” or chain. We will create the web using Inspiration to develop the product. This, of course, will be added to your portfolios.

Let’s look at the subject material first:

Student e-Portfolios at Scofield Magnet Middle School

14 09 2008

Students, Parents and Teachers,

We have been using PowerPoint to develop an ongoing and relatively simple way to showcase our learning in the 7th grade technology class. Every student will develop and save their own portfolio. This is the basis for the fourth quarter grade as well as a portion of the student’s grade in the preceding quarters.

STUDENTS
– Please look at the posted link for How to Use PowerPoint in our BlogRoll.

PARENTS – Please note that PowerPoint is traditionally used as a presentation tool, however we have chosen to use it for our portfolio collection method.

I will be adding information as I learn about it. Presently, I am utilizing a personal teaching portfolio at TaskStream for my Sixth Year Degree at the University of Connecticut at Storrs.

I have included some links for you to look at:

Students will need to bring a photo of themselves to add to their portfolio. All portfolios will be confidential unless I receive student approval to share their portfolio.

Excel – Working With Spreadsheets

7 09 2008

We are now taking the data which you received from your multiple intelligence survey and have the task of creating a column graph and a pie chart.  This will graphically display your current “strong” intelligence(s) and all of the nine intelligences which were surveyed.

Today there are three links to look at from About.com

The first site will be:

http://spreadsheets.about.com/od/excel101/tp/080726_ten_spreadsheet_terms.htm

You will need to open open the Cornell Notes file for Excel on our server and answer the questions using these links.

http://spreadsheets.about.com/od/excel101/ss/Excel_Screen.htm

http://spreadsheets.about.com/od/excelcharts/ss/Chart_wiz_step.htm

The project requires your completion of the Cornell Notes and the completion of your multiple intelligence graph and chart.

SO, WHAT ARE MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES?

1 09 2008

The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. These intelligences are:

bullet Linguistic intelligence (”word smart”):
bullet Logical-mathematical intelligence (”number/reasoning smart”)
bullet Spatial intelligence (”picture smart”)
bullet Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence (”body smart”)
bullet Musical intelligence (”music smart”)
bullet Interpersonal intelligence (”people smart”)
bullet Intrapersonal intelligence (”self smart”)
bullet Naturalist intelligence (”nature smart”)

We will be doing an activity this week to determine your strengths, or intelligences, based upon a survey questionnaire that you will complete.  From here we will develop a spreadsheet and chart to show your strengths at this time and what you may need to improve upon.
